Final elimination

It’s still technically Tuesday… yeah, sometimes I can be a doof. So, let’s finish this thing and get  a page together.

Vegetables

  • Curry Roasted Broccoli – I’m gonna try this one this week – I like broccoli a lot.
  • Grown up Tater-Tots – We really don’t need more potato recipes… But these look very good. And simple. Will be trying.
  • Asparagus with Eggs & Parmesan  – Adam doesn’t like hard-boiled eggs… so, skipping.
  • Asparagus Ribbons – So… I tried this (tonight actually) and WTF, who has time to create strips of asparagus with a vegetable peeler? Especially of a 1/2 lb of asparagus. Got frustrated and changed to cutting the asparagus into 4ths. Got more frustrated and changed to chopping into chunks. And wouldn’t you know it? The ribbons tasted the best. Adam’s volunteered to sou chef so, I’m willing to try it once more. We’ll see.
    Asparagus Ribbons
  • Asparagus & Radishes with Mint – Radishes aren’t something we’ve had a lot of in the past, and I’m all for adding variety in our veggies. Plus, we both like asparagus. So, yes, trying this one.
  • Marinated Eggplant – Excuse me, I’m supposed to marinate this thing for 6 hours after cooking? When is the expectation to eat it? In the morning with breakfast? That’s more than 6 hours, marinating overnight. With dinner? 1) I don’t cook in the morning – it’s enough work getting out the door on time as is and 2) work is more than 6 hours! Skip.
  • Zucchini & Carrot Fritters – Nope. I want more vegetable recipes, not carbs and these are primarily pancakes. Look good though.

Dinners

We’ve got a lot of dinner recipes already… Looking for 1) cheap (Adam is starting grad. school in September) and 2) less meat – meat is expensive, not great for the environment, and I”VE GOT LOTS. ::sighs:: Which doesn’t mean I won’t be eliminating all the non-vegetarian recipes… this is how I end up binders of meat centric dinner recipes…

  • Crockpot Paella – has paprika. paprika == migraine. Nope.
  • Slow Cooker Sweet Potato Chili – 1) paprika. 2) stealing Adam’s schtick. Nope.
  • Anelletti Pasta with Sausage and Greens – 1) pasta (yay!) 2) One-ish pot (yay!) 3) Greens! So, yep.
  • Homemade gnocchi – I’ll start trying to make my own pasta when a) I’ve got some of those pasta roller attachments for the kitchen aid, thank you very much (yes, I know I don’t need one for gnocchi) and b) after I’ve gotten a handle on canning. Or brewing (cider at least). What? I can be arbitrary if I wanna 🙂
  • Farro and Sausage-Stuffed Baked Apples – Adam made the ‘oh wow that sounds good’ face (i’ve got a whole picture dictionary of his faces 😀 ), so YEP
  • Shepherd’s Pie – Sorry, not a fan of making mashed potatoes as part of a recipe. Arbitrary, but definitely makes a recipe feel like too much work. Cut.
  • Chicken and Swiss Chard Pasta Bake – I think I counted three separate cooking parts to this one, even if two can be done simultaneously (boil the pasta, wilting the chard, and baking everything together). And that’s if you already have some cooked chicken hanging around for shredding. Nope.
  • Chicken in Milk – Adam’s face: ‘huh, intriguing’. Me: 90 minutes? I’m gonna forget it in the oven aren’t I? Adam: That’s what timers are for!
Yes, we’ll be trying this one.
  • Italian Wedding Soup – I am content to a) not make meatballs, b) leave the soups to Adam, and c) leave ordering Italian wedding soup for restaurants.
  • Kale, Chickpeas, and Sausage with Oven-Baked Egg – Mouth watering from reading the recipe? Check. Will be trying? Check.
  • Mixed Bean Masala – India inspired spicings for beans and rice? Yes, I’d like to try that please.
  • Chinese No Clay-Pot Chicken with Soy & Ginger – 1) 15 minutes is not enough marination time for chicken and 2) with this much time on the stove before things go in the oven, I’d rather just do stir-fry.
  • Curried Vegetable & Chickpea Stew – Vegetarian, yep. Slow cooker – eh, calls for 4 hours, that doesn’t work out so well for me… although, we do have this slow cooker with a timer and there’s a stove-top version. Okay, looks fairly cheap, plentiful, and tasty – I’ll try it.
  • Lentil, Mushroom & Sweet Potato Shepherd Pie – 1) paprika, 2) red wine, 3) mushrooms (really need to get over that one… promised Adam I’d try portobello mushrooms this week), and 4) roasting potatoes before I get to eat. I’m hungry enough when I get home as it is. Nope. Shame, I want to try adding more lentils to our diet.
  • How to Roast a Leg of Lamb – 1) Adam has this covered and 2) saw a graphic showing the environmental impact (CO2 release I think) of bringing various proteins from the farm to your plate. Lamb was absolutely the worst for the environment of the ones shown. And I really wish I’d saved that link so I could be citing my sources….
  • Pork Stir-Fry with Asparagus and Sugar Snap Peas – Very, very similar to other stir-fry recipes I’ve already got. Other than the pork bit. But still, no too similar.
  • Tomato, Broccoli & Mozzarella Pasta Casserole – Apparently when it comes to casseroles, I have somewhere in my mind that they’re supposed to function like slow cookers, as in ‘what’s with having to cook stuff before it goes in the oven?’ This looks worth trying to work through that. Also, you know, vegetarian. And full of tasty, tasty dairy.
  • Cheesy All-Vegetable Lasagna – Looks tasty and worth trying as a big batch make ahead on the weekends. We’ll see how it goes.

Well, I think that went better in the being picky department than my previous attempts.

More elimination

Seeing as I have an entire holiday weekend (hooray!) I’m gonna try and go through the rest of the recipes, and make a final list of what I will be copying out and (eventually) trying. Which means I need to go through the Dinners, Vegetables, Lunches, Breakfasts, Desserts and Other sections… they’re long. Well, lets see when my brain starts its revolt.

Other

Desserts

I already have a lot of dessert type things in my binders. So many, in fact, that they all get their own binder. So… I’m gonna try and be super picky with these recipes. It needs to either be something I don’t already have or be so much better than what I’ve already got that I can tell that just by reading the recipe.

So much for being picky and eliminating lots of from the dessert group.

Breakfasts

Adam and I eat cereal pretty much every morning, even weekends. So….another group to try and be picky with.

  • Spiced Honey Peach Muffins – So many fruit cupcake muffin recipes have I! sugar at 2/3rds (by weight) of the flour… I bet I could just use peaches instead of apples (drop the walnuts), of blackberries, of carrots , etc. and get something similar/good. I’ll try that next time peach season rolls around.
  • Pumpkin Pie Oatmeal – Slow cooker? check (only way oatmeal gets made around here really). Pumpkin is yummy (to me) – we’ll see how Adam feels.
  • Spiced Apple Ring Pancakes – I’m not feeling the battered apple rings, so cutting this one.
  • Baked Pumpkin Steel Cut Oatmeal – Nope, too much work in the morning (I’m slow enough as it is!) and no tested slow cooker version.
  • Sweet Potato Hash with Sausage & Eggs – This looks delicious.
  • Spiced Pear Muffins – See previous comments about cupcake muffin recipes
  • Holiday Breakfast Wreath – Kinda on the fence on this one and in the spirit of being selective and saving my wrist from lots of handwriting, eliminated
  • Baked Chai-Spiced French Toast – We have a habit of cubing the ends of bread loafs when they start to go stale and sticking the cubes in the freezer. Then when the bag gets full enough, Adam soaks the bread in a custard mix and bakes – he calls this a crustard. That’s what this recipe reminded me of – I think I’ll try this spice and milk mixture the next time we do that.
  • Blueberry Breakfast Bars – These look good but the recipe calls for rye flakes (although it mentions to substitute more rolled oats for them if you want) and raw sesame seeds – so if I can find raw sesame seeds at Glut the next time I go, this recipe will get copied out. So, in, pending final approval.
  • Savory Parmesan French Toast – French toast isn’t in the rotation often enough for me to justify trying out and potentially adding two more recipes for it. And I rather try the chai-spiced version, so this one gets cut.

Lunches

For me, lunches need to be quick to make in the morning or easily made as a big batch on the weekend and just grabbed from the fridge/freezer in the morning. I have a feeling that’s going to eliminate a lot of these…

Annnnd, now it’s Monday night and time to post, with the vegetables and dinners group still left to do. arg.

Finally, actual recipe elimination

I am never, EVER letting my ‘recipes to try’ folder grow to 80 bookmarks again. 80. Do you know what opening all of those at once does to your browser? No! Because you are all smart people who don’t do that.

So, with 80 possible recipes and being me, I decided to sort them into categories.

As you can see, this is no where near an even breakdown, but mentally I’m going to be tackling it group by group. But first, recipes that make me go ‘what was I thinking?’ and remove them from contention, based solely on the title:

Chicken Tagine with Apricots, Almonds and Chickpeas – I have something if not exactly like this, extremely close to it in my rotation already
Pasta with cauliflower, sausage & breadcrumbs – I think I tried it already, but at any rate, neither Adam or I like cauliflower
Chocolate Buttercream – Sorry, no frosting that means I cannot eat the cake (which leads to the question whether I’ll be keeping the Chocolate-covered Strawberries – the answer is yes, so I can try and make them for Adam’s birthday, seeing as they’re his favorite dessert and all.)
Vanilla Sugar – Seeing as I won’t be able smell the results, it seems like a lot of work for something I cannot reap the benefits of and doesn’t seem like it’d make a good DIY holiday gift. That last bit may be silly talk, but it’s what’s rattling in my brain right now. And I just hand coded an HTML table. I can arbitrarily eliminate recipes if I wanna 😀
Fluffy Vanilla Marshmallows – … We don’t eat marshmallows, why would I make them?

So that’s 5 out of 80 eliminated. Otherwise known as 6.25%. Oy.

A couple groups tonight, from actually looking at the recipe:
Bread:

  • Apple Butter Challah – Nope – I’ve got 2 challah recipes I’m happy with and the addition of apple butter is just not different enough from my apple challah recipe to be worth the hand pain writing things out
  • No-Knead Bread – Yup, this is a technique I haven’t tried yet

Pizza (aka, we have a pizza stone, we should use it more)

Snacks

  • Homemade Jerky – this looks tasty if a bit time consuming (maybe I should look into that dehydrator…), but I’d be able to make a big batch and then have protein snacks at work
  • Apple Cider Granola – Yup
  • Sugared Pecans – Well, since I seem to have completely mislaid my spiced [nut of choice] recipe, sure, I’ll try it
  • Granola Bars – Nope. Has brown rice syrup. Not buying another random ingredient only used in one recipe to sit in the pantry for months.
  • Strawberry-Rhubarb Streusel Bars – Also Nope. Has cream cheese. We don’t buy that very often and if I’m making bars, I want to throw them in my bag and have a snack that can just sit out of the refrigerator for days. Which is a shame, I like strawberries and rhubarb.
  • Medjool Date & Apple Charoset – Dates, Apples, Pecans, Walnuts! Hurray!! Manischewitz, BOOO! Oh well, I try this any way.

So, three more down. More group by group eliminations next Tuesday. The end result should be a list of recipes I can post on a page around here and then cross out as I actually copy them out. Whee!
